Is rain heading my way?

The line above the map says it in words for where you are: whether it's raining, when the next rain arrives, and when it stops. The map shows the rain falling right now, about 60km around you; press play to watch which way it's moving.

How do you read a rain radar?

Colour shows how hard it's raining: the paler colours are light rain and the stronger ones heavier. The key on the map is the radar's echo strength (dBZ): the higher the number, the heavier the rain. Press play to watch the last couple of hours and see which way the rain is moving and how fast. A long band means steady rain for a while; scattered blobs mean showers, which can miss you by a street. If the rain is upwind of you and heading your way, the speed tells you roughly when it arrives.

How far ahead can a rain radar see?

A rain radar shows the rain that's falling now, not a forecast. Following its movement works well for an hour or two, until showers grow, fade or change course. In our own tests over wet days in October 2026, tracking the radar caught 93% of the rain in the next hour. For later today and tomorrow, see will it rain today.

Where does UK rain radar come from?

The UK's weather radars are run by the Met Office. They send out pulses that bounce off raindrops, and the echoes are stitched into a map of the whole country every few minutes. Weather for Dads reads the Met Office radar composite every 15 minutes for its next-hour call. The map on this page is Ventusky's.

Is there a rain radar near me?

This page centres the radar on your location: from the app's saved place if you use Weather for Dads, or from your phone's location when you tap "Use my location". Nothing is stored about where you are.
